Not content with taking the music world by storm, film-scorer-turned-ethereal-pop-innovator Giovanna is now on the shortlist to receive an award from the internationally-renowned film festival, Moscow Shorts.
The nomination comes for the music video for her track, ‘Can’t Go Back’, directed by Luke Bradford and masterminded by Bradford and Giovanna together.
The video for ‘Can’t Go Back’ is a beautifully told story of nostalgia and poignancy told from an abandoned church, in which Giovanna plays piano and watches home videos projected onto the walls. It’s eerie yet heartfelt, the music is icy yet warm and altogether it’s totally and utterly Giovanna.
Giovanna has been on and off our radar for a while, ever the enigma as she releases slice after slice of glacial pop perfection. She’s a talent, that’s for sure, and her music is often perfectly translated to the screen in her music videos, appropriate for someone whose roots lie in film scoring.
Her latest release, ‘Young Heart Player’, sees her vision interpreted into dance form by the talents of Kayla Lomas-Kirton and Duwane Taylor. The choreography takes the idea of power struggles in romantic relationships, which the song speaks about, and translates it into the wider concept of power struggles as a whole. The result is an intricately beautiful and politically charged piece about the notion of inequality and force, and a truly unmissable video.
Watch the video and keep your fingers crossed for ‘Can’t Go Back’ to do well in the Moscow Shorts! We’re rooting for you, Giovanna!
