Interview: Loch Ness Monster - Justin Shaner
Lochness Monster, an alternative rock band based in Florida has just weathered an historical tropical and released their video, "Pixie Cut", off their full length album entitled, "Fables". The band was formed in 2014 by guitarist Justin Shaner, and includes Michael Morello, on vocals, Rene Rivera on drums, and Camille Zea on bass.
Following the release of "Fables", the album enjoyed several weeks on the CMJ charts opinion the top 50 position. They are currently playing shows throughout Florida.
How did your band get a name the likes of Lochness Monster?

I wish I could tell an interesting story about this but I just created a list of around 20 names and it was a process of elimination.  Lochness Monster was the only one left that I liked!  I also noticed that there aren't any bands that spell the name with just 2 words.

I love your music, who writes the songs and where do  you your inspiration from?

I compose the music and Michael writes the lyrics and vocal melodies.  My inspiration comes from how I'm feeling at the moment.  When making "Fables" I would be driven to head into my garage where my guitar rig is setup and jam out on whatever came out of me, I'd then keep repeating what I liked and record it on my iPhone.  I'd then play some of the songs at rehearsal and we'd decide what we liked best there.  So for me it's more of an emotional inspiration and kind of a spiritual experience bringing out these emotions inside me in musical form.  Michael has a great way of turning these songs into a visual experience, many times he'd write the lyrics right at rehearsal the 1st time he heard the song.  Some of the songs lyrics are also based off characters that Michael is inspired by.

Do you plan on touring to support the release?

Yes, we are planning out a tour but we just need to make it work with everyones family and work schedules.  It will be posted on our website:

Have you released your video for "Pixie Cut" yet?

Yes, here's the link to view it:

Is there a favorite song that you love to play live?

I'd say right now Pendulum is my favorite to play live it always seems to get a good reaction from the crowd and it's the type of song that doesn't get old or boring for me while playing it live. It has its slower melodic parts and more energetic heavy parts and I really like playing the mix of the two.

Where do you hope to be musically in five years?

I hope to be making more albums with Lochness Monster and playing live as much as possible.

What's next?

We've discussed recording a new version of a cover song and let fans choose the song.  We'd probably record a new song or 2 and release the cover and new songs together.  We are looking for the right label to release our next full LP.  Other than that, we will be playing our album "Fables" live and adding some new songs to the setlist as they are finished.  Oh we're also going to shoot another music video, deciding on which song off "Fables"
