Youtube Star Anna Akana To Headline Indie Feature “Go Back To China” From “Already Tomorrow In Hong Kong” Director

Multi-hyphenate Anna Akana is set to headline the indie feature film Go Back to China, director Emily Ting’s follow up to Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong.

The semi-autobiographical film follows party girl Sasha (Akana), who after blowing through most of her trust fund, is forced by her father to go to China and work for the family toy business. Through her journey, she gets a much needed dose of reality check and comes to term with her estranged family. A bittersweet portrait of a fractured family, the film also offers an honest look at the human cost of things that are made in China.

Two time Hong Kong Film Award nominee, veteran actor Richard Ng (Rigor Mortis) plays Sasha’s estranged father Teddy. Lynn Chen (Saving Face) plays her half sister Carol. And Kelly Hu (Arrow, X-Men) rounds out the cast as Sasha’s mother May.

“This is a very personal story about my family in China that I’ve been wanting to tell for a long time. I couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with this group of talented Asian actors to bring this story to life. At a time when Asian American representation is still so lacking in Hollywood, it’s such an uphill battle to get films like this made, and I am just so grateful for the opportunity to tell my story,” says Ting in a statement.

Ting’s Unbound Feet Productions will be producing along with Hong Kong based Sophia Shek and Film Independent Spirit Award nominated Frederick Thornton. Lowell Shapiro and Mike Dill of Black Box Management are executive producing.

Principal photography is slated to begin on location in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, China this spring.v

Akana is best known for her YouTube Channel, which has almost 2 million subscribers and generated over 200 million video views. Along with roles in the Netflix feature You Get Me and Comedy Central’s Corporate, she also created, wrote, executive produced and starred in Miss 2059 for Verizon’s go90. She can next be seen in the YouTube Red original series Youth & Consequences, which she stars in and executive produces.

Hu will next be seen in the upcoming AMC series Dietland. Chen most recently wrapped production on Aimee Long’s untitled New York-set police drama.

Ting is repped by Gersh and Black Box Management. Akana is repped by UTA and the Coronel Group. Chen is repped by Sovereign Talent Group and Authentic. Hu is repped by Buchwald and Mainstay Entertainment.
