Melaku: "Golden Age"

"Golden Age" is the debut album for singer/ songwriter Melaku. This spiritual production tells a story of the artist's beginning through the different chakras with each track representing one of the seven spiritual centers of the human body. The album contains some of the best written pop songs on the planet today. Personally I am obsessed with his music. The EP will be released on April 27th.

Melaku could sing as soon as he could speak. Born in California to an Ethiopian father and Jewish-American mother, Melaku was already playing guitar by age six. At age 13 he built his own home studio and went on to record covers of his favorite music. He played in bands and starred in musicals as well as writing and recording pop and R&B songs. He currently works behind the scenes writing pop songs and is going through spiritual awakening, and decided to become a solo artist.

What is "Golden Age" about?

I guess there are different ways to talk about it. One is the music and one is the message. Which are you thinking?

You can tell me about the message, and then you can tell me about the music.

Basically I have been going through a spiritual awakening since about 2012. The "Golden Age" theme has come up a lot in my journey. There is a possibility for the earth to move into the golden age. It's kind of based on ancient prophecies and different things like that that I have gotten interested in over the years.

What do you mean by a "Golden Age"

A Golden Age is basically a time of peace and enlightenment where spiritual understanding is widespread throughout the population. Instead of there being a lot of confusion and division there is sort of the unification and then an understanding of common truths. For example Plato's tales about Atlantis, basically the idea about Atlantis was that it was a golden age. Certain people believe that if there was a golden age that it was pre-history and that basically evolution is not linear but that it's cyclical. So through these different ages in the Indian scriptures I have an idea of cycles or Yuga. So we are moving out of the dark age into a golden age. How long it takes is up to us, the humans free will, and what we think is best.

That is positive. So now, how about your music?

The music is basically a crossover of artists that I grew up with and current artists. I've used influences for the album from Marvin Gaye, David Bowie, The Beach Boys, even like 60/70s AM gold that my mom introduced me to growing up, like Hall and Oates, America and bands like that that I haven't really heard in mainstream pop music as much. I still as a writer write pop songs, R&B, dance Pop's and stuff like that behind the scenes. I realize that there is a structure for pop music that I enjoy a lot, and that comes naturally to me. So I thought what if I merged these early influences that I had from the 60s and 70s especially, with my modern pop understanding. I still want to the sound to be classic enough where it's like....I mean there are a some of Digital things going on, but it doesn't sound digital. It sounds like a real band. The authenticity of sound was important in the creation of it.

When you said that you write pop music behind the scene, what exactly did you mean?

So basically I work as what's called a "Top Liner". A Top Liner basically gets instrumentals from producers. It might be a fully fledged instrumental or a skeleton of one. So a top liner takes that instrumental and then writes lyrics and melodies, then demos it, and basically shops it around to different artists or labels or publishers, trying to get placements. I also have a studio and I have clients where they will come in and I will help them write a song, and figure out the melodies, and lyrics, and do the vocal recording. Actually most pop artists on the radio are involved with  a producer who basically do the instrumental and then top line writers who are more focused on what the singer is going to be doing. I would say almost every pop artist on the radio at the moment.

Interesting. Do you plan on touring in support of your EP?

I currently do you not have sufficient funding to do a major tour. I am looking for different options for that. I'm focusing currently on building or marketing platform online. So there isn't a tour booked at the moment, but it is an intention I have and I hope I can get enough buzz through this project where I can generate enough interest where it would be feasible.

If you could have your ultimate stage fantasy what would you need to happen?

There's an indoor and an outdoor version. For whatever reason I feel pretty comfortable with larger crowds. So I think about 500 to 1000 people on a nice field, whole band, drummer, guitar and bass, and a couple of keyboards....if there is room for strings and horns, if there is a horn section even better..lights of course. A nice light show. A nice projected screen on the back, that pretty much does it. A nice sized crowd, that is a sweet spot for me.
