Pink Cigar: "A Quick Journey Into Insanity With No Hope of Escape"

As guitarist/vocalist Edd Whyte proceeded to try and ingest my microphone whilst leaning against the bar at Mau Mau in the West End of London, I quickly and equivocally decided that if their music is as good as their look and attitude.....these guys are going to become a household name....or at least a household threat ...

The London based rock with a hint of punk band soon proved that their music was none other than orgasmic, insanely fabulous, addicting, and attention demanding. Members include a bunch of Sam's who go by the names : Sam Rutland on bass, Whiplash Jackson lead vocals, Edd Whyte on guitar and vocals and Sid Mayall playing the drums and the only member who wasn't present at the wackiest interview I've ever attended ....

I investigated two of their officials videos, "Get Up" and "Blues to Bed" and was completely sold for life, as I watched lead vocalist Whiplash Jackson run down Portobello Road, screaming on the top of his lungs while innocent bystanders glanced at him at him in horror.

You can see the Pink Cigar for yourself and experience the music and insanity on May 19th LIVE at The Black Lion Brighton......show starts 7:30

Why did your band originate and how long ago?.....Edd, please don't eat the microphone...

Edd: When...2009. Why.... To do Rock N Roll....

Where are you all from?

Edd: Three of us are from London, one from Bristol.

Tell me about your newest release.

Whiplash: We have a song called "Bombs" coming out. It's a beautiful song, but it's our view of what's going on in the world right now. We did a video which is quite fun, put also quite to the point. That's coming out as soon as possible. We've got the single  launch on June 10th. It's at The Camden Assembly.  We will be releasing the video at the same time.

Introduce the band members and tell me who writes the music.

Sam:  I'm Sam Rutland. I play bass. Edd Whyte is the guitarist. Whiplash Motherfucking Jackson is the singer, and Sid but unfortunately he's not with us. We all write the songs. Collectively.

What influences the music?

Sam: Life. Just anything strong enough to evoke emotion.

Whiplash: Anything we see in London on a daily bases. People's faces not looking at each other, everyone's really sad faces going around moaning about shit...

Edd: London is our habitat...so just by default ....it's in our face....

So you did this very cool video...Whiplash was walking down a street yelling and you filmed people's horrified faces looking at him..,

Whiplash: That was right there ( he pointed to the street outside of Mau Mau Bar). It was a great little event that was. There was no music...just shouting.

Edd: Everyone was just "what the fuck". We got some really good action shots on that.

You've been to New York…..will you be going back?

Whiplash: Yeah, New York, New Jersey. Once we do our next assault we will come back. We're getting momentum right now. We need a bunch of songs to get out of the  way. We need to get bigger, get more money to get the plane, to do the gigs...

If you could have your ultimate stage fantasy, what would you need to happen?

Whiplash : Daisy chains .....and the crowd just going crazy ....

Edd: Probably for me is if someone just turned up....

What's your favorite thing about playing live?

Edd: Just the adrenaline.

If you could talk about anything in the world, what would it be?

Whiplash: Eating.... chocolate....

Edd:  My jokes.

Sam: Sex and drugs...rock n roll...

Who thought of the name Pink Cigar?

Edd: Sid our drummer came up with the name...First he said let's call it "The Pink Cigars". But I said... um..not sure...during that time he was saying Pink Cigars is a winner...Me and Sam thought about it and decided to knock off the "S" and the "The"...Then Sid came back and said, " You can't call it Pink Cigar anymore because there's a  transsexual bar with that name.

Whiplash: I didn't really think about the penis reference, honestly ...I think of it now... like beautiful color...but Cigars smell...
