Have you called ‘SOS’ yet? Delena taps into a common consciousness
The world is a not-so-great place right about now. There is the sense of a state of emergency the world over, be it the pandemic itself or #BlackLivesMatter protests. Who would have thought we’d turn to pop to express our panic?

The world is a not-so-great place right about now. There is the sense of a state of emergency the world over, be it the pandemic itself or #BlackLivesMatter protests. Who would have thought we’d turn to pop to express our panic?

Delena, previously of ‘Animal’ fame (a song which dealt with perceptions of female beauty, and specifically with beauty pageants), has now dropped ‘SOS’, a dance song with a message. The lyrics talk about reaching a breaking point, crying for help, and finding strength in this admission of vulnerability. The instrumentation backs up this notion of inner strength, with a powerful marching drum beat accompanying the pre-chorus.

High praise has already been received for Delena’s efforts, from none other than Popjustice, as well as Clash and Wonderland. Her inventive and incredibly stylish videos have already racked up an impressive 5 million streams.

In Delena’s own words, “Sometimes, in order to heal you have to admit your own vulnerability - in my case it was writing and recording this song. Letting everyone know it’s out there and that I’m not afraid anymore felt very empowering.”
